Dressember Update

What is Dressember?

TWENTY-ONE days of dresses so far. That’s right, 21 days of dresses. Why in the world did I commit myself to this kind of challenge in the month of December? Why must I take these selfies every day?

The goal of Dressember is to raise awareness and funds to fight modern slavery. Dressember put together this pretty infographic to share the not-so-pretty facts about slavery today. It’s not warm and fuzzy. It’s not “Happy Holidays”. It’s real, and it’s happening.

How did Dressember start?

How does this sobering information tie into me wearing a dress for 31 days in one of the coldest months of the year? The founder of Dressember, Blythe Hill, became aware of the issues of human trafficking in 2005. She wasn’t quite sure what her role in raising awareness could be until about four years later, when she created the Dressember challenge as a personal style challenge. Eventually, friends and friends of friends joined in and by the year 2013, it became a full force campaign in the fight against modern slavery and human trafficking.

How can you Dressember?

Wearing a dress for 31 days straight has brought up the opportunity to share this mission and raise awareness as friends and family members ask me about my wardrobe choices. It also provides a great opportunity to raise funds to “rescue and restoration of enslaved people across the world”. Some advocates put together teams, create competition within their friend group or even issue more interesting challenges if they reach a certain monetary goal.

I haven’t done anything too fancy in my Dressember-ing, except that I would love for you to look into Dressember and see how you fit into the equation. I would LOVE to have a handful (or MORE!) join me next December as we challenge ourselves and others to take a hard look at modern slavery.

My Dressember Experience

Not only have I had some good conversations with others (even strangers) about Dressember, but I’ve had some good heart-to-heart chats with myself as I get dressed in the morning. I’m not going to lie, some mornings it’s a big struggle to find an outfit that’s warm enough and mom-friendly enough to get me through the day. When I start to complain or grumble about this, I have to snap back to reality and remember WHY I’m challenging myself. In the grand scheme of my life, this isn’t hard. Like. At. All. Put your dress on, Nicole, and move on!

Overall, it’s fun for me to scrounge through my closet to pair an oversized sweater with a simple black dress and tights. It engages some creativity in my brain that gets lost in the day-to-day shuffle at my house. My girls love it because Mommy looks “fancy” most days. Though, some days I call it more of a bag lady look, but they’re into it.

The Final Dressember Stretch

I’ve got TEN days left in December to wear my dresses and raise awareness for the campaign. If you feel like you’re interested, do some research and spread the word about Dressember. Consider joining me next year, I’d love to participate with others!
