Switching to Safer Deodorant

By now I am sure you have at least caught wind of the safer deodorant movement. You have probably wondered about buying safer deodorant but are pretty overwhelmed at the idea of it. We hear ya. Nicole and I have been using clean deodorant for years now. In this article, we break down why to make the switch and how to do it.

Why Switch to Safer Deodorant

Let’s start with: what is wrong with conventional deodorant in the first place. These are the ingredients that can have a negative effect on your health:

  • Parabens to preserve

  • Artificial fragrances to cover up odor

  • Aluminum, the active ingredient

We have talked about parabens and artificial fragrances before on the blog. They are endocrine disruptors - you can read more here. These two ingredients alone, applied in your delicate armpit area can have a huge effect on your hormone health.

Let’s Talk Aluminum

There have been stories in the news about how aluminum is connected to Alzheimer’s disease. So, how did we get from these new headlines all the way to, “You need to use natural deodorant?” It is honestly kinda complicated, which is why I think most people don’t discuss the details. Let’s go….

The blood–brain-barrier protects the brain in a way that is different from any other part of the body. However, it has been studied that aluminum is making its way through this barrier. Not only does it enter, but it accumulates as you age. Detoxing or removing this aluminum is very difficult.

The higher the body’s burden of aluminum the more likely that it manifest itself as disease. In the brain, aluminum will contribute toward neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.

So, the research is pointing towards what is called chronic aluminum intoxication being linked to neurodegenerative disease. Cutting down on our exposure to aluminum can help protect our brains. Aluminum is in things like: medicines, vaccines, baking powder, other household items, AND deodorant. Changing up your deodorant is a great way to avoid daily exposure to aluminum through your skin. Your skin absorbs 60% of what you put on it.

How Safer Deodorant Actually Works

There are a few ingredients that seem to be in most all safer, cleaner deodorants:

  • Baking soda is the odor fighting ingredient. This can be pretty harsh on the skin.

  • Arrowroot powder or a clay to absorb moisture.  This still allows the skin to breathe and detoxify the body.

  • Essential oils to cover odor and nourish the skin.

  • An oil or fat that will help the effect of baking soda, and act as a carrier.

If you are an antiperspirant user you might notice that none of these ingredients do that. Natural deodorant doesn’t stop you from sweating. Sweating is a good thing, we want to, swear! Don’t believe me, about sweating? Read this - it detoxifies the body. Natural deodorant just helps absorb the sweat, detox the armpit, and covers odor.

Give yourself time as you make the switch to a safer deodorant. It will take more than a few days for your body to adjust. If you break out in a rash, stop the use of that brand, but if you’re worried about sweaty armpits, give it a little time to even out.
