Healthy Valentine Snacks for Kids

It is almost Valentine’s Day, and in the words of Daniel Tiger "Who doesn't like LOVE DAY?" I feel like I need a Valentine’s snack for everything we attend that week. Here are some fun, healthy kid snack ideas.

We love what we have coined “snacktiviites.” Basically, this is a snack that your kids can play with while they eat. This buys you the time you need to catch-up on those dishes. Meanwhile, your kids are having fun building a positive relationship with food. Win, win.

Sometimes it’s hard to embrace the mess, but make a spot for it in your Valentine’s Day celebrations. It’s fun to explore food, get messy and have a snack!

Strawberry Fruit Leather

This is a healthy, refined sugar free, and dye free alternative to the store bought stuff. My kids had a blast helping me make it. Get them involved… let them pull off the strawberry leaves, even cut off the top with a butter knife, and then push the button on the food processor. A fun tip... if your kiddo is old enough to use scissors, clean them off, and let them cut shapes in their piece of fruit leather.

Fruit Leather Recipe:

Ingredients

  • 1 container strawberries

  • 2 T honey

How to Make It:

  1. Preheat oven to 170 degrees (this should be the lowest tempature it will go too).

  2. Trim and hull the strawberries.

  3. Blend the strawberries until very smooth, the easiest way to do this is with a food processor if you have one.

  4. Pour on a parchiment paper lined baking sheet. Spread until smooth.

  5. Bbake for 4-6 hours. You don’t want it to get crispy, If the edges start to get cripsy, remove.

Watermelon Pops

Snacktivities don’t get much easiesr that this. My kids loved these and had so much fun helping me make them. Get them involved. We used chocolate chips to decorate with, but sprinkles work, too. Just press them into the watermelon. Tip: Cut up the extra watermelon and freeze on a cookie sheet, to use for smoothies later on.

Watermelon Pops Recipe

Ingredietns

  • 1 watermelon

  • Plastic straws

  • Heart shaped cookie cutter

How to Make it:

  1. Cut the watermelon into rounds, about an inch thick.

  2. Press your cookie cuter to make the shape. If you don’t have a heart cookie cutter just use a piece of paper cut into a heart as a template to cut around.

  3. Stick the straw in the bottom of the heart, decorate.

Valentine Fruit Stamps

This is my absolute favorite snacktivity we have done yet. It is messy, but so much fun! Not to mention who doesn’t love strawberries and chocolate. My kids had so much fun making art and licking their fingers at the same time.

The strawberries will make the perfect heart stamp. Cherries and their juice make the perfect little lip kiss.

A few tips to make it a little easier. We used Enjoy LIfe chocolate chips, so they are dairy free and refined sugar free. A clean paint brush helped cut down on the mess. The chocolate did, some what, dry on the paper.

Fruit Stamp Recipes

Ingredients:

  • Bag of chocolate chips

  • Container of strawberries

  • Bag of cherries

How to Make it:

  1. Melt the chocolate.

  2. Cut a V in the top of the strawberry, around the stem. This will form the top of the heart. Then cut the strawberry in half, from top to bottom.

  3. Cut the cherries in half, around the pit. Use the side that doesn’t have the pit as the stamp.

  4. Dip the strawberry in the chocolate, or paint with chocolate. Then stamp to make a heart.

  5. Press the cherry on to the paper, inside face down, push out the juice. This will make a lip kiss.

Hot Pink Smoothie Bowls

Hot pink smoothies are my girls’ jam these days, so we decided to make them into smoothie bowls similar to the ones Mommy likes! This was a great opportunity to introduce a newer, thicker texture of the smoothie as well as allow them to have freedom to decorate their bowl with newer toppings they’ve never tried.

This hot pink color comes from frozen dragon fruit from the grocery store - mine was at Whole Foods. The brand is PitatyaPlus. Dragon fruit offers many benefits including: vitamin C, calcium, antioxidants and can also help strengthen the immune system. I also just learned fairly recently that dragon fruit (also known as pitaya is a member of the cactus family - another fun factor for the kiddos to discuss while you snacktivity.

We usually have leftover smoothie mix, and we spoon it into these fun ring popsicle modes and pop them into the freezer. The girls go through these so quickly, and I don’t feel bad because it’s a smoothie! We even make it a part of our breakfast from time to time.

Shortcut: The recipe below details my favorite way to do this but involves some waiting. If the kiddos are ready to smoothie bowl without waiting, add less liquid (1.25 cups or so) to the original mixture. I’ve also used a few cubes of ice in the past to thicken it up.

Hot Pink Smoothie Bowls Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 banana

  • 1 cup of frozen whole strawberries

  • 1 cup of frozen pineapple chunks

  • 1 pitaya smoothie pack (3.5 oz)

  • 1.5 cups liquid (Refrigerated coconut water is my top choice.)

  • Smoothie bowl toppings: hemp hearts, chopped strawberries, kiwi, cacao nibs, coconut flakes, chia seeds, granola, pomegranate sees, chopped bananas, chopped apples - the possibilities are endless.

How to Make it:

  1. Place all ingredients into the blender.

  2. Blend, blend, blend! We’re going for a thick smoothie consistency, so you may have to stop the blending process, stir and continue.

  3. Pour mixture into a freezer-safe container with a lid and freeze.

  4. When ready to serve, set out frozen mixture for about an hour. This will depend on the size of the container used. I checked back every 20 minutes or so.

  5. Scoop out the sorbet-like smoothie mixture into small bowls.

  6. Set out toppings, and let the kids decorate!
